Water is the most important resource to sustain life on Earth. Keeping it clean and free from contaminants is a top priority for both small municipalities and large national agencies in the developed world. It is both a local and global concern in the war against germs.

The water treatment process, including chemical coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection, is a highly scientific process that requires cutting edge technology and materials. Similarly, the processing of wastewater, from purification to removal, is equally challenging. For the massive volume of water to be treated properly, a plant is laid out with different stations, from intake out of a natural water source to pumps to screens to traps to clarifiers to basins to more basins to more clarifiers to tanks and so on, and then finally to the community.

Our Experience with Water Treatment Facilities

Currently, Nitterhouse is finishing a whale of a Water Treatment Plant in Newport News, Virginia. Eleven buildings! We were contracted to design, manufacture and install the precast concrete there. Different custom components were required. For instance, on the Main Electrical Building, 60’ Double Tees were designed to clear-span over multiple large generators and switchgears. On the Recharge Well Building, the roof was comprised of our Hollow Core (NiCore) planks, a more shallow, more economical precast for shorter spans. Beams were added to support hatch openings in the roof, so that large equipment could be transported in and out. Solid panels were a cost-effective solution inside, serving as partitions in a few spots. On all the structures, the exterior walls were specified to be 9” thick and insulated. On the RAS building this was particularly important as there was a network of pumps and piping that could not freeze or overheat. The exterior was aesthetically pleasing and well-received, an architectural gray with large brick panels covered with Endicott thin brick. Newport News wanted to preserve the classic historical architectural style of their vintage port city on the James River.

A Complete Precast Turnkey System!

Precast concrete can be customized to fit each community’s unique plant setup. Precast concrete can support the weight of both the machinery and the tremendous volume of water, and itself, allowing for longer clear spans and more critical room for sensitive equipment. Precast concrete is durable, economical and lasts a long time, peace of mind for the taxpayer. The controlled environment within is also protected from weather, wear and tear, and damage. (Imagine a frozen busted pipe in the middle of winter.) And the community is protected from the intolerable noise of the plant’s machinery. And finally, precast concrete is beautiful, with a variety of architectural finishes that can complement the style of the city or town in which it is located for generations.

As communities grow and change shape over time, old plants are renovated and new plants are needed. Architects and Engineers often partner with Nitterhouse Concrete Products to help design and manufacture the structure(s) that make up these plants. Because we have helped design and build so many in the Mid-Atlantic region, government officials consider Nitterhouse an authority and reach out to us at the very beginning to assist in the planning phase. Working with the staff Engineers at Nitterhouse Concrete Products allows for design flexibility and value engineering. We also provide P.E. sealed calculations and erection drawings for our work.

Often these projects are time-sensitive and Nitterhouse is able to customize a design, manufacture, and install in accordance with most desired schedules.
